What is NormaTec Compression Therapy?

NormaTec’s focus is athletic recovery, but its background is in the science of blood flow: The circulatory system delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to every cell in the body. Simultaneously, this complex circuit removes metabolic wastes such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid, effectively flushing the system of toxins. The idea behind compression therapy is that by increasing blood flow to specific parts of the body, more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to those areas, thereby relieving pain, reducing swelling, and speeding up recovery.

Compression therapy increases the flow of blood and lymph in the venous and lymphatic systems by applying controlled pressure on the extremities.

NormaTec – What You Need To Know

Advanced medical technology by NormaTec offers dynamic compression that utilizes compressed air to mobilize fluid and improve circulation. When blood vessels and arteries narrow, circulation is restricted, and blood flow is reduced. By adding pressure to areas of restricted flow, the veins in the limbs loosen. This loosening decreases venous pressure, reduces edema, and aids the body in moving blood towards the heart. It also engages the lymphatic system to flush and remove waste, swelling, and inflammation from the body.

What Are the Benefits of Compression Therapy?

Compression therapy increases flexibility. The relaxing of muscles and surrounding tissue helps to increase range of motion.

Compression therapy keeps blood flow healthy, aids with pain relief, and reduces swelling. Compression therapy is also used to prevent blood clots, particularly after surgery, and has proven to be a highly effective treatment for venous leg ulcers ( VLU).

How does NormaTec Technology Work?

NormaTec compression uses a specific pulse technology that employs three techniques to help with the body’s recovery process. The three techniques are gradients, pulsing compression, and distal release.

  • Pulsing compression: NormaTec uses pulsing compression as compared to “static compression.” The pulsing pattern is more effective because it copies the way the muscles pump in the arms and legs. It helps move the fluid in the limbs.
  • Gradients: NormaTec utilizes pressures to keep fluid in the limbs from being moved in the wrong direction.
  • Distal release: NormaTec “releases the hold pressures” once they’re not needed in order to prevent backflow. The NormaTec method releases the hold pressure as soon as possible, allowing each part of the limb/leg to have the most rest time it can without a huge pause between the cycles.
