Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

A simple way to understand how mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: heals injured tissue.

Under Hyperbaric Therapy (HBO2), Oxygen, which is a much smaller molecule than a Red Blood Cell (RBC), is pulled from the larger RBC, which is carrying the oxygen molecules to tissues via hemoglobin. RBC’s are the vehicle transport for all oxygen within our body. After extraction, it is now concentrated within the surrounding plasma. This allows the smaller Oxygen molecules to easily permeate, or cross barriers between blood and injured tissue, allowing Oxygen to saturate the areas involved and allow healing to occur.

Understanding the mHBOT Device

This transference from the RBC to the plasma is important because injury creates inflammation, which is a barrier that limits the ability of red blood cells to penetrate as it is very thick and compressed, leaving little room for larger RBCs to deliver vital oxygen for healing. However, when we undergo Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, the smaller O2 molecules are forced from the RBC into the plasma and can permeate through the inflammation and saturate the injured region, traveling 400% deeper into the tissue. Oxygen not only heals the injured body part but also decreases inflammation, returning tissue physiology to normal function. This is extremely important in Injury, Burns, Post-surgical, Diabetics, Lyme, Brain Injury/Concussion, Multiple Sclerosis, Autism/ADHD/Learning disabilities, Stroke, Other Neurological Conditions, Hypoxic injuries, Sleep Apnea and the list continues. The more oxygen we have in our bodies, the more energy we produce.

There are two types of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: high pressure and mild hyperbaric therapy. High pressure is generally referred to as hospital-grade HBOT or just HBOT. It is generally administered between 1.5 – 3 ATA (absolute atmospheres . ) Wound clinics can go as high as 5 ATA. Mild hyperbaric, or mHBOT, is hyperbaric oxygen administered at 1.3 ATA. Each type of hyperbaric oxygen therapy has its advantages and disadvantages. The higher pressures are very useful in acute illnesses and wound healing. The lower pressures are safer, generally without side effects, and better for chronic illnesses. People with compromised immune systems, autoimmune conditions, and significant detoxification issues frequently find it very difficult to handle the higher levels of oxidative stress associated with the higher pressures of HBOT. The Quebec/McGill study, using HBOT in the treatment of cerebral palsy, found that patients at 1.75 ATA and 1.3 ATA were almost identical in improvement, and the patients at 1.3 ATA experienced better results with fewer side-effects (Stroller, 2004). One of the great advantages of mild HBOT is the low number of contraindications, risks, and side effects. “This is one of the lowest risk procedures in all of medicine,” says Paul Harch, MD, a leading expert in hyperbaric medicine.

mHBOT at Natural Pain Treatment and Wellness

Our office has the Grand Dive Pro by Summit To Sea. It is one of the largest mHBOT chambers manufactured in North America. It is very spacious ( like a tent ) and comfortable, which is especially important for those with anxiety. Two people can easily fit inside with plenty of space. During the 60 – 90-minute session, you can work on a laptop, listen to music, read a book or take a nap. Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers are Class 2 medical devices and require a doctor’s prescription (MD, DO, DC, NMD, NP) prior to use. Contact us if you need a referral to a Doctor for consult and prescription.

People that tend to do better with lower pressure mHBOT are those with:

  • Mold toxicity
  • Lyme Disease (especially those with active infections)
  • EBV
  • Cancer ( mHBOT is used as an adjunctive therapy never a primary therapy)
  • Pulmonary complications like COPD
  • Brain Disorders such as:
    • TBI
    • Stroke
    • Parkinson’s
    • Early-stage Dementia
    • Alsheimer’s and
  • Children on the Autism Spectrum
